What are electrolytes and why are they put in drinks?
Professional athletes are at a high risk of dehydration because of excessive sweating. While sweating is normal and healthy, it leads to excessive loss of water and electrolytes, which must be replenished to avoid dehydration. During an intense workout or game, your body may lose up to 2 liters of sweat per hour. If you lose too much water and electrolytes, your body becomes dehydrated, leading to nausea, fatigue, dizziness, and lack of performance, mental confusion, heat exhaustion, or heat stroke.
